Mekong Delta Trip

Our weekend trip to Mekong Delta started very early today morning. Started around 6:30am in a mini bus, with lot of us feeling sleepy πŸ˜‰ We reached Ho Chi Min city and then traveled further to reach Mekong Delta. Highways are very good and well maintained.

Stopped in between at Mekong Rest stop, which has a beautiful lotus garden. We all took photos with funny poses. Then proceeded further to reach My Tho, the gateway of Mekong Delta.

We took a big boat to reach Thoi son island. The journey is awesome, just felt like traveling in Venice. One side of the Mekong river takes us to Cambodia and other end to the sea. The area is so fertile that they grow paddy three times a year.

We tasted lemon honey tea and many fruits like dragon fruit, papaya, pineapple etc (don’t even remember names of few), fresh from the fruit garden. Then took a row boat to reach the other bank of Mekong River.

Took a horse cart to reach restaurant for lunch. Our travel guide was really good, he made sure that we don’t repeat our route and every route is a new experience.

Got good vegetarian food, thanks to Phuc and Nam for ordering it for me. Dishes are mainly made of tofu and soup. I am loving the soups here in Vietnam. Everyday my team looks at my plate with curiosity and concern, on the veg food that I got, just like a suspense serial. These days they are loving my food too πŸ™‚ Took a nap after lunch (Vietnamese way) in coconut garden.

We then took a boat to reach Phoenix island, which has monkey bridge and dragon symbols. We had to cross a crocodile pond by walking on a rope in monkey style, so the monkey bridge. I didn’t try that though. Dragon symbolizes luck in Vietnam, so can see lot of dragon symbols everywhere (have seen couple of them in Vung Tau also). Also the island is a religious place, where coconut baba used to reside. That baba used to have food only made of coconut. Found it very strange.

We reached My Tho back by evening and had Brazilian cultural night at hotel. It was a great trip with lot of fun and new experiences.

Mekong River starts from Himalayas in Tibet and reaches sea at the end of Mekong Delta, crossing 5 countries. Found it marvelous.

Day2

Today morning, we went to see a 100 year old temple of Buddha near My Tho. There is lot of peace in that place and I felt so happy by the time I am back from there. The architecture is very fascinating and quite different from the one I have seen in India.
