Day3 – On ferry to Santorini

I have been waiting for this day since long time to travel over sea on a ship !! We reached Piraeus port early in the morning. I was amazed by the size of the ferries and their smooth handling. I felt that ferry is not the right word, they should be called ships 🙂

We can board a ferry directly just like walking on a road. I have never witnessed a harbour like this before. It was awesome. Heavy luggage, cars, bikes are also transported in the same ferry. We had to keep all our luggage also in the ground floor of the ship beside the vehicles.

We took Bluestar ferry which is considered the best. There are mainly four different types of seating: Economy, Airseats, Business class and Cabin. We booked Business class as our journey is long (7hrs around). I would say any type of seating is good, it looked like a luxury cruise for me, though people there treat that as ferry.

Business class – little costly, but comfortable for long day journeys. Perfect for views and relaxation.

Economy class – Cheapest one, good for short journeys and when you are boarding the ferry at the starting destination. But when you board at a stop in the middle, you wouldn’t get good seating options or sometimes no seats in peak season.

Air seats – Costlier than economy and cheaper than Business class. You can get allotted berths, which look exactly like flight seats. The best option when you board ferry in a middle stop. You would miss views here in case you don’t get a window seat.

Cabin – The costliest option available. Preferred for night journeys or long day journeys where you want to rest.

Deck is open for all classes and anyone can access them. Lot of smokers are seen sitting on decks. If you can bypass them and find a good place, you will love the experience.

I felt so exciting to go all over the ferry and explore each section. I loved the open deck. There was a fresh breeze from the ocean and it was so calming. I was breathing deep, trying to inhale oxygen sufficient for a year 😛

It definitely surpassed all my expectations and this is the best ferry experience I could think of 🙂 The only problem which we faced on the ferry is with the food. There are couple of food joints on the ferry, but only 1 or 2 vegetarian options with little stock. We can actually carry food along with us, as there are no checks for food anywhere.

Didn’t feel like a long journey. The ferry stopped at Naxos and Paros in the middle before reaching Santorini. It was fun watching different islands in the middle.

We reached Santorini around 2pm and the white buildings are clearly visible from the ferry. I expected Santorini to be a plain island like any other island in Maldives, but was surprised to see that the town is on top of hills. It was a good ghat journey to reach our house in Pyrgos village. I could clearly see why it is called a must-visit island. It was fabulous with stunning views and white washed houses.

We booked our house using Airbnb and its a traditional Greek cave house which was well decorated with good terrace view.

We quickly finished our lunch and went out to explore Pyrgos village. There were many colorful shops and windmill shaped houses nearby. We took rental bikes at a place nearby to explore the island next two days on bikes. Public transport is not that good there. Bikes or cars can be rented per day basis and costs are decent too.
