Day 8 – Road Trip to the West

We woke up to witness clear skies and we could get to see all the mountains surrounding our house in the village. The sun’s rays falling on the snow made it shine in golden yellow color and the view was spectacular.

The Ólafsfjörður lake is famous for its clear reflections of the mountains and sky, and with the clear sky it looked picture perfect.

I got to click a clear photo of snow and sea combination 🙂 In another one month, I guess the entire mountain will be covered with snow.

We said good-bye to our cute little house in Ólafsfjörður village and proceeded on our journey to Snaefellsnes Peninsula, the western part of Iceland.

We prepared ourselves for a long drive from north to west and it was time to enjoy the landscapes during the drive. We would be going away from the sea here and wouldn’t be able to meet sea till the end of our ride. So, it would be a drive in between hills and mountains!

It was yet another intensely sunny, warm day and we stopped at a place called Vatnsdalur (Lake valley), known for its variety landscapes and green vegetation. We were at such leisure that we posed for a lot of photos 😛

I just fell in love with the cloud shapes and the sky in Iceland. Whenever there is a sunny day, it is worth to just sit and watch the sky and its colors. Luckily, both our long road trip days turned out to be sunny, giving us more scope to enjoy 🙂

We stopped at a small canyon named Kolugljúfur with a waterfall Kolufoss beside it. The water looked fresh and was turquoise in color.

We took a lunch break and continued our journey to the west, and we were back to beach views 🙂

All of a sudden, the landscape around us suddenly changed and it looked strange. We observed the same pattern for around 4-5 kms.

Then it changed back differently to mountain landscape.

We entered Snaefellsnes peninsula and stopped at Gerduberg cliffs on the way to our house. These cliffs are made of basalt columns, very similar to the ones which we saw in Vik black sand beach.

Snaefellsnes peninsula is also called as “mini Iceland“, as it has a bit of all the places as in rest of Iceland. It has volcanic activity, glaciers, waterfalls, basalt columns etc. It serves as a perfect summary and recap of our complete Iceland trip.

As we moved on from there to our stay, we found another landscape on the way, with a red hill in between, surrounded by lava fields.

We couldn’t stop there for long as it started raining by then.

We moved on to our stay located in Hellissandur village in the peninsula. It felt like a name of a place in Bangalore, but that’s not how it is supposed to be pronounced.

We reached our sea view home finally to witness the sunset. It turned out to be amazing.

Our stay was booked for 2 days in this house. This house was too big for four of us. It had no WiFi or TV, but had a huge collection of books, music CDs with speakers and a lot of paintings. We enjoyed the house and its concept.

The weather changed from sunny to rainy to windy by the evening. Though we had a good balcony with a sea view, it was chilling cold with strong winds outside and so we couldn’t sit in the balcony. I started feeling bad that our trip was coming to an end, as this was our last destination 😦 Hoping to enjoy the last two days of our trip well !

We looked outside in the night after dinner, hoping for northern lights, but we had no luck with the cloudy sky. We were very tired after a long drive and relaxed for the day after a good dinner!
