Kiama is a great day trip destination from Sydney and a good stop-over place on the way to Jervis Bay or Batemans Bay. We went to this place multiple times so far and explored all the best places to visit in and around Kiama.
Kiama Blowhole
First and the most popular one is the Blowhole, which is just beside the Kiama lighthouse.

The blowhole is a nature’s beautiful miracle where the recorded height of water from the hole is over 30m. Water gushes out of the hole as a fountain and drizzles all over the place. It was a great treat to watch and I always enjoyed like a kid watching it.
Kiama blowhole was formed from volcanic lava flows about 260 million years ago. If we walk a bit ahead from the blowhole into the rocks, we observe its unique black color and structural formation. I keep wondering if lava used to flow out of the hole when it was volcanic!

Note: This phenomenon is highly weather dependent. The best time to visit the blowhole is when the wind is high. We went there around 3 times and found good height only once on a good windy day
Cathedral Rocks
Cathedral rocks is the result of nature’s beautiful carving of the volcanic rocks over millions of years. To reach there, you need to walk towards the southern end of Jones Beach, from where you will find the large set of basalt rock formations.

This place is a dream spot for photographers and the best time to capture its beauty would be around sunrise.

Bombo Headland
This is one more jewel in the Kiama’s crown. The Headland can be accessed via the Kiama Walking Trail. The unusual basalt rocks makes this place surreal and out of world.
These rock formations are formed as result of region’s mining history and blue metal quarrying in the 1880s and 1900s, along with centuries of exposure to the powerful ocean forces.
We didn’t find many people around this place and it felt like a perfect place for photo shoots. We could just sit on the rocks and enjoy waves crashing the rocks for hours.

Apart from these, the town has beautiful picnic spots and coastal walks to explore around, making it a must-visit destination. We always love the idea of going to Kiama and even though its only 2 hours away from Sydney, we dream of spending few days in Kiama in a beautiful Airbnb near the ocean.
